If this is your shelf
This site explains why people leave. If it is happening to you, the next questions are different, and they have answers.
Everything on this site is about the pattern: how many, why, what happened next. If you came here because your own shelf is breaking, you may have found what you were looking for, and it may not have helped the way you hoped. Knowing that 3,086 other people named the same reasons does not tell you what to say to your spouse tonight.
That is a different job, and we built a different site for it. Mormon Faith Crisis is written by a psychology Ph.D., a coach and a therapist who have walked thousands of Latter-day Saints through exactly this. It is organised by what is happening to you rather than by what is wrong with the Church.
Where to go
- Start here if this is new: what a faith crisis is, why you are not broken, and what to do and not do in the first weeks.
- Answer five questions and get a short plan: three things to read, one to watch, one to do this week. Nothing is recorded.
- The map: the eight stages most people move through, with what is normal at each one.
- Telling people, and scripts for the spouse, the parents, the bishop and the ward.
- Stay, step back, or leave: an honest look at every option, with the practical matters.
- Get help: therapists who understand Mormonism, peer groups, and crisis lines.
If you are not coping
Thoughts of not wanting to be here are common in a faith crisis and they respond to help. In the United States and Canada, call or text 988. Elsewhere, find your country's line. Recovering from Religion's helpline, 84-I-DOUBT-IT (844-368-2848), is staffed by people who understand leaving a religion.
